A House in Motion
Reimagining the Fondation Cartier in Paris with Duravit as Part of the Architectural Concept. The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is redefining its presence with a new location in the heart of Paris. Within a historic building on Place du Palais-Royal, French architect Jean Nouvel has created a spatial structure that opens up, transforms, and reflects the institution’s public character. As part of the overall architectural concept, the project also incorporates Duravit sanitary solutions in the publicly accessible areas of the building.
Space as a Flexible System
The design combines the historic substance of the building with a completely restructured interior architecture. While Jean Nouvel preserved the façades and arcades, he developed a flexible spatial system within. Five large-scale platforms form the building’s structural framework. Hydraulically adjustable, they enable changing spatial sequences, varying levels, and shifting sightlines. Glass ceilings with movable louvers complement the system and allow for precise control of daylight.
In an Urban Context
The architecture deliberately seeks interaction with its surroundings. Along Rue de Rivoli, floor-to-ceiling glass façades open up views between the interior and exterior spaces. The Fondation sees itself as a publicly accessible cultural venue and an integral part of the urban fabric.
Functionality Down to the Details
The sanitary facilities feature Starck 3 wall-mounted toilets from Duravit, complemented by accessible Vital versions with greater projection. The collection’s understated design integrates seamlessly into the overall architectural concept while meeting the demands of highly frequented public spaces.
