Interior refurbishment for a 75 m² dwelling for a young artist located in the heart of the Gracia district in Barcelona designes by Piedra Papel Tijera Interiorismo.
This design proposal proposes the creation of a diaphanous space in order to maximize the natural light.
The space is distributed around the open kitchen, that is the centre of the house and it separates the common area from the bedroom. Its central island, in White Dekton, brightens the centre of the house while maintaining the warmth and the connection with the rest of the space by using natural oak wood in the wardrobes. Next to the living room there is a multi-purpose room with a large library made of natural oak that also stores a folding bed. This area was designed to be both the artist’s office and the guest room.
The pre-refurbishment space had a gallery overlooking the inner courtyard, typical of Barcelona homes. A major work was carried out by opening all the windows to generate a much greater entry of sunlight. With the refurbishment, this bright space is habilitated as a dining room and reading area. The bedroom with the dressing room is located on the other side of the kitchen facing the main street. All the furniture was tailor-made and finished in natural oak. The dressing room cupboard extends to the kitchen area, functioning as a connector between the communal area and the bedroom, thus emphasising the feeling of openness of the entire apartment.
The bathroom entirely clad in Carrara marble stands out for its simplicity and precision in the details, it gives a sophisticated and minimalist character to the apartment. This refurbishment project stands out for its limited use of materials, natural oak, marble or dekton and black steel which is used in the details. Such simplicity highlights the original building materials of the walls and ceilings and, at the same time, the use of straight shapes and hidden mechanisms contrasts with the organicity of the stone wall and the vaulted ceiling.
