Home to its architect and her family, this simple shed addition to a 1940s Cape Cod house allows for expanded family and entertaining spaces and introduces a new master bedroom suite on the first floor. The design knits the architect’s astute attention to materials with her family’s evolving lifestyle. Compelled by the desire to maintain the Cape home’s vernacular, extended entertaining areas and clever storage systems achieve design objectives while preserving uniformity of shape and proportion. Aligned with the centrally located kitchen, an outdoor kitchenette and ipe-slatted deck extend the entertaining space into the landscape. The new family room and screened porch adjoin the kitchen, flaunting unique angular vaulted ceilings. Traditional building components and finishes are thoughtfully placed on unexpected surfaces and in unconventional patterns and quantities. Old and new are woven together, expressing their family history within the playfully modern and unconventional design details.
