The project redefines the concept of tourist accommodations within the historic neighborhood of Trinidad–Perchel through architecture on a minimal scale that is precise and deeply rooted in the site. The project occupies a narrow plot between buildings on Zamorano Street, reinterpreting the area’s traditional typology through a compact layout in which the courtyard once again becomes a defining element of interior life, ventilation, and light.
The proposal treats the conditions set by the urban regulations and the historic surroundings not as limitations, but as design tools. The façade restores the neighborhood’s characteristic urban continuity and engages with its domestic scale, while the interior introduces a contemporary, flexible, and social atmosphere linked to new ways of experiencing the city.
With just two stories above ground and an extremely compact footprint, the building houses eight guest units and common spaces designed to foster interaction among travelers, transforming the hostel into a small social hub within Málaga’s historic center; here, the accessible rooftop expands the collective experience and turns the architecture into a venue for social gatherings and cultural activities.
The project also incorporates an artistic and collaborative dimension through the work carried out in partnership with the artist Play In Colors, whose graphic design on the facade and interiors lends the building identity, color, and a distinctive character, reinforcing its open, youthful, and urban spirit.
FUNKER Hostel thus proposes an architecture that is modest in scale and resources but rich in experiences, capable of revitalizing a neglected urban void and transforming it into a new hub of contemporary community life within the historic city.
