Hotel des Artistes located in New York City at 1 West 67th Street was built in 1917 as combination studio / residence for artists. The typology for these typically small apartments were double height studio space with a mezzanine bedroom and bathroom all fronted with a large steel casement window. The mezzanine bedroom overlooks the studio and the space under the studio was a small efficiency kitchen and a sitting room.
Accepting the existing typology, this historic apartment has been renovated and rethought for a beauty industry executive as a minimalist, decluttered envelope of space. A strict order of elements and details and a limited material palette informs the design.
Large unbroken surfaces, extended planes and lines and the intermittent small detail increase the perceived volume of the space, underscore the order and re-express the studio concept for the 21st Century.
