IKC De Brug is a biobased, energy-neutral integrated childcentre combining preschool, primary education and after‑school care under one curving green roof. Designed by De Zwarte Hond, the building employs a fully timber load-bearing structure and maximizes natural light, openness and collaboration by organizing all functions around a central multifunctional heart. The school is completely energy-neutral and constructed with extensive bio-based materials. Its village-facing gabled form and robust brick façade connect to local identity, while the green roof and natural surroundings reinforce its ecological ambition.
The project is part of a village expansion and therefore positioned to respect the local context. The north façade, facing the village, reflects the village character with its gabled roof and has a playful appearance thanks to a gentle curve. The south façade presents a more robust silhouette toward the polder landscape.
Construction uses timber (HSB / timber structure, CLT in sports hall) to minimize concrete consumption, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. The façade is clad in sustainable, low‑maintenance brickwork using English bond brickwork, giving the building durability while concealing the timber interior structure. As a result, the wooden structure is hidden from the outside, making the surprise even greater upon entering. Inside, the wooden trusses, joists, and columns have been deliberately left visible, creating a warm and natural atmosphere.
A curved, fully green roof integrates the school into its surroundings and enhances biodiversity while accommodating photovoltaic panels that contribute to the building’s zero-energy performance. The design places the building centrally on the plot, surrounded by greenery and natural play areas.
Connections around the shared central space
IKC De Brug strengthens community cohesion by uniting childcare, education and after-school programmes in one accessible and inclusive building. The heart functions as a shared space where children and educators meet, learn and celebrate together, fostering social interaction and transparency. Large windows between classrooms and this central area support supervision, calmness and inclusivity. The sports hall connects directly to this central space, making the building suitable for larger events with the village community.
