Context & Design Concept

In the midst of Vietnam’s rapid urbanization, townhouses in major cities have become increasingly enclosed, fragmented by walls and private rooms. This spatial isolation has, unintentionally, created emotional distance between family members. The more people feel confined by the bustle of the streets outside, the more they long for openness and nature within their own homes.

Khánh House emerges as a rare pause within the dense city fabric. It is a heartfelt gift from three children to their mother — a home that embodies filial piety and intergenerational connection. Beyond meeting practical needs, the house becomes a symbol of family affection: a place where the mother can rest, sew, and nurture herself within a green setting; and where the whole family can find peace and reconnection.

Scale & Program

Despite its compact size and limited number of floors — a strategy to optimize construction cost — the house remains fully equipped and well-organized:

·         4 bedrooms for 4 family members

·         3 bathrooms

·         1 open workspace

·         1 laundry and drying room

·         1 dedicated room for the family dog, Kooky

·         A shared living–kitchen–dining area in open connection

Spatial & Lighting Solutions

The central design gesture of Khánh House is the garden atrium located at its heart. This “green lung” regulates natural light and ventilation from the ground floor to the second floor, while also linking the mother’s private quarters with the entire house.

The living and kitchen spaces are interconnected on three sides, encouraging interaction among family members. Bedrooms, though simple, are designed to embrace daylight and greenery, ensuring comfort for each occupant.

Sustainability Approach

The central garden is more than a visual element — it is a sustainable solution. Natural ventilation reduces the reliance on air-conditioning, while daylight is maximized to lower energy consumption. This modest yet effective approach reflects careful consideration of both construction and operational costs, while aligning with the growing movement toward green architecture in Vietnam’s urban context.

Architectural Experience

The interiors of Khánh House are designed with a warm, minimalist sensibility. Natural materials — wood, stone, fabric — are combined in a soft, refined manner. The staircase becomes a distinctive feature, blending solid stone steps with floating wooden treads. This composition creates a dynamic spatial experience, striking a balance between visual lightness and structural safety.
