Sturdy, transparent and modern. Those are all ways you could describe the new accommodation for the Koedood family firm in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. The design combines historical influences with craftsmanship, a love of all things maritime and a twenty-first-century office. A blend of solid work, professionalism, technology and pride!
It starts with the ‘display window’, as you approach the premises. Once you’re inside, the maritime and technological atmosphere is stronger. You can take a look not only in the showroom but also in the storage hall behind, where a healthy fifty to sixty engines will be waiting for new owners. The transparent, two-storey lobby links the sales area to the first floor, which is where the various workplaces and meeting areas are located. Large green walls guide the visitor upstairs and provide a natural, soft counterpoint to the clean lines of the architecture.
On the upper floor, the building has a facade with deep, vertical slats that act as a sun screen. These slats are partially perforated, subtly providing the building’s direct ventilation. They also add depth and shadow, so that the building’s appearance keeps changing throughout the day. In the evenings, the rigid structure is highlighted further by the illuminated windows behind. This showcases to an even greater extent the fact that the building was constructed by people who love the architecture of Mies van der Rohe.
It’s meant to be striking, meant to stand out. And it does, thanks to the transparent outer walls, the refined rhythm and the clear system of dimensions. Not only through its fluid curves of glass and the subtly shaped details, but also through the integrated sustainability and the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ label. In addition to the curved glass, the steel and the Trimo cladding, plenty of greenery has been used in the interior to create a pleasant working environment. The Dejo grilles under the overhangs merge seamlessly into the ceiling of the engine sales area. The same applies for all the materials in the building. There are seamless transitions from one to the next, thanks to the assiduous attention paid to the technical details. This use of materials and dimensioning are what give the building its characteristic appearance.
