The attic duplex apartment is located in a newly renovated apartment building near Letenské Square. Layout-wise, the apartment consists of two rooms. One room includes the kitchen. On the ground floor, besides the entrance hallway, there is a bathroom and bedroom. The upper floor of the apartment features a living area with a kitchen and workspace, as well as a terrace. The terrace faces the courtyard, protecting the residents from the noise of the busy Korunovační Street.
The 52-square-meter apartment in the new attic extension was handed over by the developer in a shell and core condition, with only the bathroom fully completed. The client wished to fully adapt the apartment to his ideas about space utilization and design, so we decided on larger structural modifications after consultation. These adjustments included modifying the layout, changing the staircase shape, relocating the kitchen, and completely renovating the bathroom. The newly designed staircase shape, moving the hot water tank to the bathroom ceiling, and placing the washing machine under the stairs allowed us to maximize the use of the apartment's spaces.
In the design, we respected the owner's wish to furnish the apartment in a masculine style. The apartment is designed for a young man – simply, practically, with an emphasis on easy maintenance. We worked with contrasts in the design. The interior is dominated by steel, concrete, and industrial elements. The steel staircase connecting both floors is left unfinished in raw steel, as is the custom-made oval heating. Perforated black-painted sheet metal visually separates the workspace from the living area with the kitchen. Perforated sheet metal is also used on the upper cabinet doors in the kitchen. The steel base with concrete slabs forms custom bar seating. The floor is made of concrete plaster with a prominent texture. The lighting fixtures are original, refurbished.
The bathroom is placed inside a wooden cube on the ground floor. The bathroom is designed minimally. The walk-in shower is separated only by a fixed clear glass. Storage space is hidden behind a sliding mirror. The steel frame under the sink serves for storing small items and hanging towels. In the bedroom, the dominant feature is an upholstered bed with a wooden headboard. White wardrobes and a dresser are accented with black steel handles recessed into the edge of the doors.
Given the atypical space and irregularities of the attic space, most of the furniture is custom-made.
