The apartment, located in a newly renovated building in Prague's Vinohrady district, boasts a spacious layout of 4+kk (four rooms plus a kitchenette). The interior design included a minor layout modification, which involved enlarging the main living space with the kitchen and creating a walk-in closet in the entrance hall. This design reflects the current needs of the young owner, who lives in the apartment with his young daughter, as well as the potential for future family growth.
Modern Design Inspired by Traditional Elegance
The goal of the design was to combine the traditional elements of a Vinohrady apartment with modern, timeless materials such as wood, stone, and steel, along with accessories in earthy tones, creating a calm and cozy atmosphere. The color scheme of the apartment also reflects the fact that it is currently predominantly a men's residence. Shades of gray are used, with dark stone, dark-stained oak veneer on the furniture, and wooden flooring that ties into historical patterns. The interior also includes several paintings from the owner’s contemporary collection, with space prepared for its future expansion.
Layout Solution
The newly created walk-in closet in the entrance hall is made entirely of dark gray furniture, so as not to visually separate the apartment’s hallway. This is further aided by the passageway through a free-standing wardrobe, which allows a full view of the hallway. The hallway is illuminated by natural light through large glass doors leading to the main living space with the kitchen. Additionally, the hallway provides access to the child’s room, study, and bathroom, making it the heart of the entire apartment. The hallway is spatially lowered, creating a connection with the kitchen area. The walls and ceiling of the hallway are finished in light gray concrete plaster. The chosen color combination gives the space a subtle elegance, while the dark gray furniture and steel elements add a sense of seriousness.
Living Space and Bedroom
The kitchen is visually separated from the main living area by a lowered ceiling and is connected to the hallway by large glass doors in a black frame. The kitchen is dominated by a stone island made of natural dark quartzite, complemented by a massive dark wooden table with a steel base. Steel is also used for the bookshelves. The living area is furnished in light earthy tones and kept as minimal as possible, with the main feature being a large, comfortable sofa. Above the sofa, a prominent cove is reserved for a future painting.
Vinohrady apartments are known for their high ceilings, which allowed for the use of striking light fixtures such as Lasvit and Moooi, adding a touch of elegance to the living space.
From the main living area, one enters the owner's bedroom, first passing through a walk-in closet that partially matches the design of the kitchen. The other elements are simple in shape, with a white finish combined with white perforated metal. The furniture is partially translucent, creating a subtle separation between the closet and the rest of the bedroom.
The sleeping area of the bedroom features a dark bed with a prominent headboard, and the shelves opposite serve not only for displaying art but also for other decorations. Above the bed, there is again a striking metal light fixture by Moooi.
The bedroom has its own bathroom, the main feature of which is natural blue Quartzite Blue Roma stone, complemented by light gray concrete plaster and a custom concrete sink. The same design is used in the daughter’s bathroom, with the addition of storage spaces in dark veneer. The simple material palette of the bathrooms allows the striking blue natural stone to stand out. Stainless steel accessories further enhance the purity of the materials.
Child's Room and Study
The child’s room, which belongs to the owner's almost four-year-old daughter, is decorated in light and dark pink furniture with a free play area and a reading nook. Currently, it meets the needs of a little girl, but it is ready to grow with her. For example, the house built into the wardrobe can later be transformed into additional storage space. The free play area can eventually be supplemented with a desk and chair, adapting to the new needs of a school-aged child.
The study is intended exclusively for the owner, except when his daughter occupies her favorite rocking chair. :) The bright part of the room near the entrance is focused on working at the computer and features a generous dark bookshelf. The darker rear section, with access to the balcony, serves as a place for sitting with friends and reading, with a leather sofa and rocking chair. This area is defined by linen wallpaper on the wall and ceiling in a bronze color. The overall look is complemented by a prominent light fixture with leather accents.
The Apartment as a Whole, a Home
The atmosphere in the apartment and the pleasant living experience are enhanced by live plants, textile accessories made from natural materials and textures, including curtains, decorative pillows, and throws. Lastly, the overall ambiance is enriched by interior cosmetics and decorative utility items.
