Les deux Sœurs

The pitch-black night and a large blue cliff supporting the staircases. Streaks of light, luminous skies, and three rocks that make the interior spaces dance. A shared approach to technical spaces. Let’s rock!

The building Les Deux Sœurs dates from 1890. It is located within the dense urban fabric of the Rue d’Espagne neighborhood on the heights of the Côte des Basques in Biarritz. The program aims to allow year-round and seasonal rental of the apartments, and to prioritise shared comfort and robust functionality. After demolition, the building then offers three open floors to be developed.

The design strategy, is to avoid a compartmentalization and work with solids and voids across the three levels instead, ensuring that each apartment has its own identity. By integrating ultra-specificity directly into the project, elua® deliberately challenges the prevailing norm in collective housing: the mechanical assembly of apartments, and therefore their inhabitants all across levels.

The apartments on each floor uniquely vary. The ground-floor units, accessible directly from the alley, has single bedrooms. The first-floor apartments features two separate bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, promoting shared living experience.

The top-floor apartments occupy the full volume beneath the sloping roof, offering a generous living space, two bedrooms and a separate bathroom, which is ideal for hosting a summer family.
