Situated on a steep block, this home presents to the street as a single story, double fronted timber Victorian cottage. A beautiful heritage Victorian home restored and extended to accommodate a family of four; parents with teenage children. Each family member had their own living quarters within the home with a central living hub. Timber is used extensively in both the hard landscaping surrounds to the pool and the new extension to a dramatic effect.
ARCHITECT’S STATEMENT The project is one of a series of courtyard houses undertaken by our practice. The introduction of light and the consequent creation of a sense of space and theatre is key to our architecture and interior design. We continue to explore the benefits of this model when site and brief offer the opportunity as was the case here given the site’s orientation. Winter sun enters the home via the central courtyard and the old and the new wings are sensitively linked by a suspended glazed corridor
As with many of our projects, this home continues the theme of surprise. A restored heritage façade conceals a contemporary home from the street with the new secondary entry accessed via the northern side of the existing building. Built on a steep site falling to the rear of the block, the secondary entry brings the visitor to the upper floors of the new wing where private studios and bedrooms over-look the pool and architecturally terraced landscape. Timber features throughout the project and is a striking feature of the home.
