Located in the heart of the Mediterranean city of Volos, Maja is a compact specialty coffee shop that blends architectural restraint with expressive identity. Positioned on a corner site with constant pedestrian flow, the project is conceived as a luminous spatial pause bringing calm and clarity within the fast-paced rhythm of the city.
The central idea is based on the creation of a spot where specialty coffee preparation is a daily ritual. The design focuses on transparency, providing a fresh, clean, and minimal optical result that exudes mostly a morning vibe.
The extrovert character of the space is clearly defined by its elevation design approach. The delicate white metal frames of the elevations open the space to the sidewalk, transforming the act of ordering coffee into a shared urban experience. Besides that, the handmade entrance doors, made of pine wood, add a signature touch of domestic warmth.
Both externally and internally, white surfaces dominate, punctuated by vibrant lemon-yellow elements that add a Mediterranean energy and visual continuity, evoking a nostalgic Greek island vibe. Light oak wood tones soften the minimal palette, introducing a sense of warmth and gentle contrast.
Spatial organization is highly deliberate. In a long and narrow space of 35 square meters, that includes sub-units such as preparation area, bar, corridor as well as auxiliary space (WC and storage room), a great challenge is given to a functional layout implementation, focusing on comfortable access and ergonomic standards.
The centrally placed long counter acts as both functional core and social interface, while the shelving and ceiling pendant curves guide movement while adding soft geometry to the otherwise linear space. The interior seating area consists of a long window stand that provides an extrovert sense as well as a wooden tailor-made sofa with a cozy vibe.
The use of honest, light-toned materials such as oak and powder-coated metal, establishes an atmosphere of clearness, pureness, and calm. The material palette is completed by the balanced use of white rectangular ceramic tiles. Special emphasis is given to details. Everything, from the entrance knobs to the metal pots, is carefully designed and implemented. Decorative objects like handmade ceramics and natural plants are placed deliberately, evoking the feeling of a lived-in, evolving space. In addition, the wall artworks with the curving forms act complementarily as a basic part of the design identity.
Finally, lighting design follows a laboratory approach with the use of pendant linear lights, light-boxes, as well as neon signs. All these are combined harmoniously with the warm hidden lighting that adds an atmospheric sense to the overall result.
