Client’s Brief
Located in Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi, The Matcha Tokyo by 4SPACE is a contemporary interpretation of Japanese tea culture, calm, composed, and quietly radical in its restraint. The client sought to translate the purity and mindfulness of matcha into a spatial experience that could resonate with an international audience. The brief called for a multifunctional venue that harmonizes the efficiency of takeaway service with the intimacy of ceremonial tea rituals, while standing out within the high-energy retail environment of the mall.
Concept
The concept revolves around the idea of quiet transition, a meditative passage from the noise of the mall into a serene retreat. The softly arched white façade, inspired by the traditional kiritsuma gabled roofs of Japan, forms a ceremonial threshold that introduces calm and anticipation. Once inside, the architecture unfolds like a deep breath, a sculpted composition of wood, light, and shadow where ritual and wellness meet. Every curve, proportion, and junction is designed to slow the pace of movement, inviting guests into a world where design becomes an act of mindfulness.
Various Design Elements
The interior is defined by a sequence of undulating wooden ceiling ribs that reinterpret the layered geometry of Japanese roofs while evoking the rhythmic cadence of the tea-making ritual. Beneath this sculptural canopy, a bonsai tree positioned under a skylight anchors the spatial experience, embodying balance, tradition, and grounding. Surrounding this living centerpiece, curved oak counters invite interaction, Ming Green marble tables mirror the vibrancy of matcha, and banquette seating envelops guests in a soft, diffused glow. Every surface and transition has been considered to encourage a multisensory journey, where texture, light, and silence work together to create a moment of stillness amid movement.
About the Execution
The project’s execution demanded both precision and restraint. 4SPACE approached each element as part of a seamless dialogue between craft and technology. The joinery, ceiling geometry, and curved forms required custom fabrication and meticulous coordination with contractors to preserve the organic integrity of the design. Each detail, though understated, contributes to an architectural language defined by proportion, calm, and exactitude. The result is a space that feels effortless, yet every millimeter carries intention.
About the Ambience
Inside The Matcha Tokyo, time seems to slow. Natural light softens the edges of wood, stone, and stainless steel, while reflections from the green marble surfaces add subtle vibrancy. The ambience is contemplative yet contemporary, an atmosphere that prioritizes balance over spectacle. Guests are enveloped in a sense of calm clarity that mirrors the purity of the drink itself. The spatial rhythm, from the ceremonial counter to the seating zones, encourages both community and solitude, allowing visitors to choose between connection and quiet reflection.
Challenges Overcome
Designing a tranquil, immersive environment within one of Abu Dhabi’s busiest malls required deliberate control of acoustics, lighting, and materiality. Balancing the client’s need for operational efficiency with the brand’s focus on ritual demanded an intuitive spatial flow that could support both quick takeaway service and longer ceremonial experiences. Ensuring cultural authenticity without falling into thematic tropes required sensitivity, reinterpreting traditional Japanese forms into a universal, modern language rather than literal replication. Each of these challenges shaped the final design, resulting in a space that feels both authentic and globally resonant.
Unique / Key Features
The strength of The Matcha Tokyo lies in its ability to transform retail into ritual. The bonsai centerpiece, undulating timber ceiling, and sculpted counters together form a cohesive narrative, an architectural performance where the preparation of matcha becomes a mindful act. The design elevates a simple beverage into an experience of sensory awareness, where every gesture, sound, and reflection contributes to the overall harmony of the space.
Material Selection
A refined palette of natural oak, Ming Green marble, stainless steel, and shoji-inspired textures defines the tactile character of the space. Each material was chosen for its sensory resonance. Wood introduces warmth and humanity, stone anchors the design in nature, metal adds precision, and glass captures subtle reflections. Together, they articulate a language of balance and restraint, embodying both Japanese sensibility and contemporary craft.
Furniture Chosen
All furniture was custom-designed by 4SPACE to extend the philosophy of purity, ritual, and natural wellness. Dining tables feature polished Verde Ming marble tops with softly rounded edges, resting on solid oak bases accented with stainless steel details. Chairs are crafted from natural wood with tan leather upholstery, blending comfort and elegance within the serene material palette. Banquette seating integrates seamlessly into the architecture, its curved timber base and warm leather finish echoing the fluidity of the ceiling above. Each piece reinforces the project’s core values, authenticity, craftsmanship, and a quiet sense of care.
