Set against the serene backdrop of Mina A’Salam’s waterfront, MEI transcends the typical dining experience to become a thoughtfully designed story where architecture, culture, and atmosphere come together effortlessly. Crafted by the esteemed studio 4SPACE for SHI Hospitality Group, MEI beautifully harmonises Chinese and Japanese design traditions, guiding guests on an evocative journey through space and meaning. MEI, meaning “beautiful” in Mandarin, the essence of duality that defines its design language.
The pitched roof silhouette hovering over the central bar pays homage to traditional Chinese pagodas and temple architecture, while origami-inspired ceiling folds and a restrained Zen-like atmosphere draw from Japanese minimalist principles. Crane motifs, symbolising grace and longevity, subtly adorn the ceiling and artwork, weaving cultural symbolism into the very fabric of the venue.
Diana Rysbaeva, founder of SHI, describes MEI as a living space that evolves throughout the day, balancing timeless traditions with a dynamic contemporary spirit. From the soft daylight that filters through timber lattice screens and enlivens pale wood tones to the transformation after sunset when lighting deepens, shadows dance, and the atmosphere shifts into sophisticated nightlife the venue offers a fluid experience. By night, pivot doors reshape the lounge, music crescendos with live performances and DJ sets, and the bar becomes the glowing heart of the room. Every visit reveals a new mood, inviting guests to explore the rich layers of design and cultural storytelling.
At the core of MEI’s interior lies a striking architectural gesture: the central bar pavilion crowned by a dramatic wooden pitched roof. This sculptural element anchors the space with a contemporary reinterpretation of classic East Asian silhouettes. Vertical timber screens sculpt circulation paths, offering intimacy without sacrificing openness, while an origami-inspired ceiling installation unfolds above in faceted planes that play with light and shadow.
According to Firas Alsahin of 4SPACE, the venue was conceived as a living artwork designed to provoke curiosity and deepen the connection to its cultural roots. The material palette reinforces this duality, with pale timber lending softness reminiscent of Japanese interiors, while muted vermilion accents quietly reference Chinese heritage. Brushed brass trims and bespoke lighting add warmth and sophistication, complemented by hand-finished murals and layered textiles in tones of charcoal, jade, and ink blue drawn from East Asian ceramics and fabrics. This thoughtful combination creates an understated yet expressive atmosphere where architecture and symbolism take centre stage. The outcome is a perfect blend of design, culture, and craftsmanship, making MEI one of Dubai’s most impressive new destinations.
