Mirage stood at the entrance to the AFROBANANA Festival in Lefkara like a portal beckoning visitors to step beyond the everyday. At first glance, it appeared as a sleek, hexagonal corridor of mirrored surfaces, the angles carefully chosen to produce a disorienting yet captivating interplay of reflections. By night, battery-powered stage lights illuminated the panels from the outside, casting shifting patterns of light that intensified the illusion. Despite its otherworldly appearance, the installation was surprisingly straightforward in its construction: aluminum composite panels with a mirror finish were folded to create nearly seamless joints, supported by scaffolding that allowed for quick assembly without wasting material. The dimensions were calibrated to human scale, ensuring two or three people could walk through at once without feeling claustrophobic.
As the festival progressed, Mirage took on a life of its own. Some visitors, caught off-guard by its reflective depths, skirted around the edges, preferring not to venture into a space that dissolved boundaries so completely. Others lingered at the threshold, using their phones or cameras to capture the kaleidoscopic distortions of themselves and the surrounding park. Dust carried in by the foot traffic subtly settled on the mirrored panels, and soon a new layer of interaction emerged: festival-goers traced notes, names, and little sketches onto the reflective surface with their fingertips, leaving behind temporary messages that vanished and reappeared as the mirrors were wiped clean or further smudged.
