The proposed introduction of new limestone boulder breakwaters as a defence against coastal erosion created the opportunity to revitalise this ailing seaside town.
This intrusive yet vital rocky breakwaters provide sites for ‘shrimp’ constructions which accommodate the facilities that would attract visitors to Morecambe. The constructions symbolise the town’s famous industry and stand as allegorical sculptures signifying the four villages that amalgamated to become Morecambe.
A new tree lined boardwalk promenade is introduced along the shoreline to link the ‘shrimps’. The ice cream vendors, fish and chip stalls and Punch and Judy shows are within mobile kiosks which can migrate to the ‘shrimps’ when hosting popular events.
