Situated along the banks of the Narmada River near Omkareshwar, the Nammadus Resort redevelopment emerged as a response to a catastrophic flooding event caused by the uncontrolled release of water from the Omkareshwar Dam. The floodwaters submerged the river-facing cottages, severely damaging the built fabric and exposing the vulnerabilities of the existing infrastructure positioned along the edge of the riverfront.
Rather than approaching the project as a complete reconstruction, the design strategy focused on adaptive reuse, selective retention, and resilient intervention. The proposal began with a detailed assessment of the existing conditions — documenting flood levels, surveying the terrain, analysing plinth heights, and identifying structural components that could be retained and reinforced. This process informed a design language centered on continuity, thoughtful restraint with efficient intervention, and sensitivity to environmental context.
The masterplan reorganises the river-edge cottages while respecting the original footprint and landscape memory of the site. Existing plinths and portions of the masonry walls were retained wherever structurally viable, reducing demolition waste and preserving the spatial traces of the earlier resort. New interventions were carefully inserted within this retained framework using a lightweight steel fabrication structure combined with locally expressive stone masonry walls.
A key architectural response emerged through the roof form. The cottages were redesigned with sharply sloping roofs that orient towards the river, maximising visual connection to the waterfront while simultaneously improving rainwater drainage and climatic performance. Internally, the planning strategy prioritised openness towards the landscape, with large glazed openings framing uninterrupted views of the Narmada River. The entrance to each cottage has been intentionally kept low and embedded within the natural terrain, creating a subtle sense of transition and humility as one moves from the built environment towards the expansive riverfront experience. This compressed threshold condition prepares the occupant spatially and psychologically before opening into the larger river-facing volume. In contrast, the toilets and private service zones were positioned more introvertedly, with smaller punctures towards the riverbank to maintain privacy and thermal buffering.
The project also investigated how architecture can coexist with cyclical environmental uncertainty. By studying flood behaviour and retaining elevated plinth conditions, the design intervention attempts to negotiate between permanence and adaptability. The material palette reinforces this intent — combining exposed stone masonry, metal framing, lightweight roofing systems, and restrained detailing to create a robust yet a refined architectural language suited to the riverside context.
Beyond the cottages, the redesign extended to the reception and public areas, unifying landscape repair, circulation restructuring, and river-edge engagement into a cohesive waterfront experience. The resulting proposal is not merely a reconstruction after disaster, but a calibrated architectural response that transforms vulnerability into an opportunity for ecological sensitivity, structural resilience, and spatial renewal.
Through analytical surveying, contextual understanding, and strategic retention of the existing built fabric, the Nammadus Resort redevelopment demonstrates how post-disaster architecture can move beyond replacement — towards regeneration rooted in memory, adaptation, and place.
