National Historical Museum

The National History Museum (MHK) is the most important museum institution in Albania. It occupies a total area of 27,000 m2, has an exposure area of 18,000 m2 and a total volume of 81,000 m3.

In order to renovate the museum and to adapt it to contemporary requirements, both architectonically and in terms of museographic issues, Casanova+Hernandez developed a detailed strategy to implement the latest international findings related to museums worldwide following the next steps:

1. Analysis of the existing and its potentials.

2. Definition of a new program including public areas that can be opened when the museum is closed: cafeteria, lounge-restaurant, educational areas, shop, library, auditorium and temporary exhibitions area.

3. Definition of a new landscape area around the building to attract people to it, with functions complementary to those of the museum itself.

4. Architectural design: public functions on ground floor and permanent exhibitions on first floor / new clear circulation system that guarantees access as well for disabled people.

5. Design of exhibitors and exhibition devices with the latest technical developments in the field

6. Museographic project coherent with the architectural project (“global museum thinking”): THE PATH OF HISTORY.

7. Definition of a new iconic image and branding of the museum: IDENTITY

8. Definition of a promotion plan to put in contact this museum with other museums around Albania through a website shown in all museums at the same time.
