Rooted in Nepal’s rich cultural heritage and vernacular architecture, the Nepal Village School redefines rural education through a campus that evokes the organic character of traditional villages. Designed using locally sourced, low-impact materials, the project blends seamlessly into its mountainous landscape while fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging. Rather than imposing an institutional character, the school is composed of modular 6x6-meter units arranged in flexible clusters.
These pitched-roof volumes reflect local building traditions and are finished with earthy textures and patterns inspired by woven textiles. The layout encourages informal connections, mirroring the social fabric of Nepalese settlements and supporting both educational and communal life. At the heart of the campus lies a secure central playground, around which adaptable classrooms are organized. This promotes collaboration, exploration, and interaction among students.
Community functions are embedded throughout the school, including a grocery store that sells produce grown in the school’s orchard—supporting local livelihoods and integrating agricultural education into daily life. Multipurpose halls serve as venues for crafts, music, and cultural events, allowing the school to act as a hub for the surrounding community. Sustainability and self-sufficiency are central to the design. The buildings sit one meter above ground on granite pad foundations to mitigate flooding, while reinforced lightweight ACC blocks finished with mud plaster provide thermal comfort.
High-pitched clay-tiled roofs with steel framing reference vernacular forms and offer durability. Bamboo louvered windows and operable screens ensure passive ventilation, while skylights at the apex of each roof introduce generous daylight into the interiors. Solar panels along roof ridges provide clean energy, and rainwater is harvested and stored beneath staircase structures for use in irrigation and sanitation. Elevated floors and open circulation encourage air flow, minimizing the need for mechanical systems. The structural system—based on a steel frame with robust seismic bracing—is designed for rapid assembly with non-specialist labor.
This makes the model particularly suitable for remote or disaster-affected areas. Beyond education, the school is envisioned as a resilient refuge in times of crisis, providing shelter and safety for the wider community. The Nepal Village School is not only an educational facility but a replicable prototype for building climate-responsive, community-centered learning environments—deeply anchored in tradition while engineered for the future.
