Nil.01 Residential Building

We are told that our cities have grown beyond their limits: populations continue to increase, while land, water, food, and other resources become increasingly limited. As metropolitan areas become denser, housing is often reduced to a question of quantity and efficiency. In this condition, the possibility of living with a sense of individuality, privacy, and connection to the street can easily be overlooked.

“Nil” explores how these qualities can be preserved within the constraints of a dense urban residential building. Rather than reproducing the traditional neighborhood literally, the project looks to its underlying qualities: the intimacy of the alley, the relationship between neighboring homes, and the possibility for residents to shape their own relationship with the outside world.

The design begins with a simple primary mass, responding to the density and constraints of the site. A structural grid is then introduced to organize the façade and establish a clear modular system. This order is subsequently disrupted to prevent the building from becoming a uniform and repetitive volume.

The northern façade, which has the strongest relationship with the street, becomes the main area of transformation. Parts of the building envelope are pulled inward to create a sequence of semi-open terraces. These spaces act as thresholds between the private interior and the public alley, providing daylight, outdoor space, and moments of visual connection with the street.

The terraces are then staggered across the façade, producing variations in depth and creating a changing rhythm along the building. In selected areas, the building planes tilt toward the street, allowing the façade to be perceived differently from different points of view. The resulting composition moves away from a single, static elevation toward a more dynamic relationship between the building, its residents, and the passerby.

The final layer is introduced at the scale of the individual dwelling. Wooden louvers are placed in front of the windows, allowing residents to control visibility and privacy. Rather than treating the façade as a fixed image determined entirely by the architect, these elements give residents a limited but meaningful degree of choice in defining their relationship with the street.

Nil therefore seeks to reconcile density with individuality. The project does not attempt to recreate the lost courtyard house or traditional alley, but to reinterpret their social qualities within contemporary apartment living, creating a building where variation, privacy, interaction, and personal choice remain possible despite the constraints of the dense city.
