Fyra has collaborated with Nokia on the development of a future-ready smart campus in Oulu, designed by ALA Architects. The large-scale project integrates advanced technology with responsible design practices.
Spanning 55 000 square meters, Oulu campus gathers offices, laboratories, and production under one roof. Fyra’s contribution concentrated on the office and common areas and visitor experience, translating Nokia’s brand identity into a spatial experience.
Known as the “Home of Radio,” the Oulu campus is one of the most advanced centres globally for 5G and 6G development. The facility brings together the full lifecycle of base station products: pioneering R&D, testing, smart manufacturing, and supply chain operations.
Accommodating approximately 3000 employees, the Oulu campus was developed through an extensive user engagement process. A digital twin of the entire office floor was created to simplify onboarding to the new office and to help facilitate effective communication regarding zoning and equipment guidelines.
The design approach emphasized sustainability: approximately 40% of the furniture in the new premises was reused from the previous locations. All energy used on campus is sourced green, and any surplus is fed back into the district heating system.
The interior design embodies Nokia’s brand and each of the nine office floors is characterized by a distinctive color palette inspired by the arctic environment. The color scheme harmonizes with the building’s Nordic wooden architecture, nature as a continuous presence. With panoramic views of pine and spruce forests and the use of natural materials, the nature is continuously present in the daily life at the campus.
Nokia’s Oulu campus stands at the forefront of digital infrastructure. The renewed environment is functional, flexible and future-ready, and offers an inspiring setting that supports the everyday experience of the people who use it.
