When soft light falls upon a space, time seems to stand still, enveloping one in a realm of slowness and tranquility. Whether it is the serenity of an open temple or the city streets embraced by sunlight, design, greenery, and a gentle breeze, we aim to blend these two atmospheres, embedding them into the space to convey this feeling to the users.
This building, located in central Taiwan, is a 36-year-old, narrow, three-story house. The interior area is 47.5 square meters, with a garden area of 22.7 square meters. The old staircase and furnishings create narrow pathways connecting the front and rear, and the staggered floor structure further segments the space.
We have restructured the staircase to adjust the flow direction, creating new pathways to shape the volume and form of the front and rear spaces. By using a large amount of white and light-colored paint, we expand the space, making the narrow house appear more spacious and bright in the lofty space. Light gray floor paint adds stability and tranquility to the space.
Since light only enters from the front of the house, we have designed the partitions to retain the necessary privacy for functionality while ensuring light and visual permeability. The designer utilizes skylight to enhance the sculptural quality of the space formed by the volumes and wall and floor paints. Openings are created in the corridor and stairwell, guiding light into the interior hallway, thereby overcoming the limitations of the narrow space as much as possible within the given constraints.
