The harbor of Scheveningen is the backdrop for the new office building of fishing company Van der Zwan &Zn. The building site lies on a peninsula opposite of the harbour entrance and is surrounded by water on three sides. This specific location of the company in the harbour was of great influence on the design. The location being surrounded by water on three sides the architecture almost demands a 360 degree orientation. The west orientation is by far the most spectacular with its view to the open sea and the sun set by the end of a working day. The building will accommodate the main office, conference facilities, restaurant and bar with lunch facilities, and a warehouse with fish inspection rooms and general space for storage and logistics. The client wanted to express the stalwart image of its company. This is translated in the design and use of materials. The layout comprises of a light glass box placed on a concrete base with sturdy concrete V-columns.

This glass box above the massive base exists of a double glass facade that give protection against the strong weather conditions that can occur on such a location. The use of glass evidently optimizes the view over the area. High quality materials have been chosen for their durability and therefore sustainability. Many of them are used untreated and will age beautifully under the given conditions on a location like this one, presenting the building again that robust appearance. Another important aspect was the link with shipping. For example on the south west side of the building a balcony was created which gives a perfect view over the harbour entrance and thus creating the feeling of standing on the ship’s bridge.
