Zigzag Architecture as Architects

Completed in 2015, the school is key stone in the urban planning strategy that aims to create a large eco-neighborhood out of two suburban districts of Sin-Le-Noble ‘le Raquetʼ and ‘les Episʼ. At stakes in the operation is the quality of life for the inhabitants in an environmentally friendly way. Following carefully the planning guidelines, the forecourt of the school constitutes a new gateway for the city. The plot measures roughly nine thousand square meters and has the capacity to welcome a primary school and a kindergarden. The idea was to unite both programs into a single strip adapting to and defining new alignments as well as the playgrounds for the schools. This goes along with the gentle nature of the existing topography. In total 5,500 square meter can host 18 classrooms for 540 students and miscellaneous shared areas such as library, a restaurant and the administration.

A taste of easiness, community, and affability can be felt throughout the complex. because of the environmentally friendly requirements, the project translated the sustainable building model regulations into features that nurtured its design: outside isolation, sunlight control, natural light in all premises, rainwater control, and low energy consumption. the educational gardens are designed for the younger children to learn about a green approach to the environment.

Brick and glass used in the façade give the building its presence. it can be read as both and open and secure, transparent and opaque, while providing its users with a pleasant space for them to learn and socialize. the school is also connected to an urban park which is currently under construction. the planted roof works as a non-accessible hanging garden that combines elegance with energy regulation requirements.
