Tucked below the end of a small drive and surrounded by dense vegetation, this property offers a sense of privacy and connection with nature rarely found in the suburbs of Orange County. The initial plan for this Lemon Heights property was a remodel and expansion of the existing 1950s house. After some preliminary studies and a survey of the existing structure, it was determined that the house could not be salvaged. The decision was made to demolish the building and start with a clean slate for a new 5,000 square foot 2-story residence. The design was conceived as a series of pavilions organized around courtyards and connected by glazed corridors that act as the building's arteries. Gabled roofs encompass the living modules while flat roofs cover the circulation spaces. Expansive glazing on the North elevation creates a strong indoor-outdoor connection and opens the house to unobstructed views of the Santa Ana mountains beyond. A palette of stone, wood, and plaster break up the massing and reinforce the programmatic hierarchy.
