Quinta da Melhorada is a requalification and adaptive reuse project in rural Portugal, near Santarem about an hour’s drive from Lisbon, transforming a historic estate with a collection of agricultural buildings into a modern rural recreational complex housing events, hotel, tourism and coliving.
The principal mansion at the heart of the estate is to become the central focal point of the development, establishing a new masterplan that interconnects the various existing structures and new building additions. In the first phase, the old stables and related auxiliary buildings to the north-west are transformed into a modern events centre around the quadrangle of the former horse riding arena.
The expansion of the events areas, construction of a hotel and rural coliving style accommodation, auxiliary leisure facilities such as a restaurant, cafe, pool, yoga and performance centre, tennis courts and playgrounds will complete the creation of an intimate but at the same time significant development in a beautiful and picturesque countryside setting close to the Portuguese capital.
The project seeks to harmoniously combine contemporary rural tourism and leisure facilities while preserving the site’s agricultural heritage and ecological and sustainable ethos and principles in a consistent ensemble of indoor and outdoor spaces.
