Covent Garden Market Building

Capital & Counties Properties Plc (Capco) invited Sculptivate to design a cladding to hide the year long renovation on the eastern side of the Covent Garden Market Building. The scaffold structure was to be roughly 8m tall, 8m deep by 65m long.

Our mission was to reduce the visual impact of such a large scaffold and at the same time being sensitive to the Grade 1 listed building to which it was attached.

Our solution was to wrap the scaffold in its entirety in 33’000 sq/ft of mirror aluminium composite panelling ( Dibond ).

A key part of this design was the ability to angle the upper panels which served not only to create new perspectives in the piazza but also to avoid any issues with glare to neighbouring buildings

The resulting effect transformed the building’s nineteenth century classical architecture into a kaleidoscopic tableau of abstract geometries, colour and light refracted from the mirrored sheet.

It captured the attention and imagination of visitors who stopped in their steps, both to contemplate the new perspectives offered of the historic district architecture, but also to interact with the reflections as they explored the venue’s multiple pathways.
