In Val Maubuée, which until 2017 was called the New Town of Marne-la-Vallée. The landscape is structured by the Allée des Bois, a broad, treelined mall linking Noisiel Park with La Grange Wood via the RER suburban train station. The powerful presence of this green grid contained within it the seeds of the spirit of this new residence.
Designing a building for people living through precarious social situations challenges notions of welcoming, ways of inhabiting, of sharing and of sociability. Our central focus with this brief was to rise to the challenge of creating a place that gives inhabitants residing there for the first time a sense of being welcomed and encouraged by the entire community.
The landscape of the mall is the main urban reference point for pedestrians in the neighbourhood. The site plan of the new residence integrates its main characteristics: smaller buildings surrounded by greenery, a discontinuous alignment with the street and perspectives towards the heart of the city block.
Conforming to the specific morphology of neighbourhood plots, and with the intention of ensuring urban variety and domestic individualisation, the brief was broken out into groups of houses of varying size, shade and composition, joined by glazed corridors linking them together. They surround a vast central garden welcoming residents and leading them towards the lobbies providing access to the flats. The residence entrance is accessed via the mall, on the natural pathway towards the RER station. This entrance fits the look of the project perfectly: simple in its means and perfectly clear in signalling its function of reception.
