Residence KMW is situated in an agricultural area, characterized by scarce scattered buildings in an open landscape, interspersed with small-scale forest fragments. An existing bungalow follows a slight slope in the terrain, making the transition from the lower road level towards a higher meadow. Adjacent to the left side of the terrain lies an old formation of pine trees, while the rest of the landscape is completely open towards the neighboring meadows.
The concept for the new house refers to the typology of the existing dwelling: a slightly elevated volume that embodies a subterranean level for most part, though the interaction with the landscape is totally different.
Due to its pronounced elongated orientation, the dwelling inscribes itself between the forested area on the left parcel side and the open landscape on the remaining sides of the parcel. As a result, the volume does not occupy any new open space and through its openness, allows the landscape to flow into the open yard, making it part of the agriculturally valuable landscape.
The horizontal upper volume is accessed by the subterranean basement level. The incision into the terrain at the road allows both access to the basement as well as the upper volume. The underground volume holding 3 bedrooms, a wine cellar and parking, is completely hidden from the view on the street side.
The upper level holds all the living spaces and the master bedroom. The bedroom and bathroom are oriented towards the old pine forest. The living spaces are positioned around a spacious open staircase and arranged in U-shape around the master bedroom.
The upper floor of the house has a concrete terrace on all sides. The terrace slab disconnects from the landscape floating above the grass. It becomes part of the overall architectural horizontal appearance, while extending the spatial experience of the living area.
The house consist of triple glazing with minimal frames, alternating with light gray architectural RDC concrete terrace slabs, canopy structure and the closed walls.
These materials enhance the architecture, and also provide a harmonious embedding of the house in its natural environment.
