Benidorm represents undoubtedly the paradigm of “tall building” of the entire Mediterranean Arc. Its Urban Planning Plan has allowed and promoted since 1958, with its successive modifications, the proliferation of this building typology. High-rise building, together with long-term planning of the urban fabric, has allowed a more efficient use of the land and in a certain way a socialization of luxury by allowing most of the homes projected in the last 30 years to enjoy a unique way. or another with sea views and proximity to the beach.
The Benidorm’s urban system obviously works, it also generates the appropriate conditions for the creation of unique buildings with a great presence due to their size and slenderness. It is here where the responsibility of architects and planners takes on a very important role in what ends up being the urban image of the city. The resolution of the equation efficiency / cost / beauty / form / function is always complex since there are many factors that intervene from the moment a promotion is proposed until it is finished.
With the Sakura Tower we have tried to contribute to the Benidorm skyline without losing sight of the functionality of the homes or, above all, the viability of the project. The floor plan has been maximized so that practically 100% of the rooms have views of the sea. We have brought together the communication elements at the back of the building and we have worked the entire envelope with a composite skin so that from most angles the Sakura Tower appears more like a sculpture than a building.
In recent years, the high-rise building that has proliferated in this area has focused on the main façade of the buildings, the one facing the sea, forgetting the rest, when it is precisely the back façade that really presents itself to pedestrians as the main access façade. The Sakura Tower presents itself to the passer-by precisely with its more sculptural, more friendly front, in the manner of giant petals that embrace the residential building without showing the evidence of its dwelling units.
