The urban regeneration of San Benedetto Val di Sambro has redeveloped two central areas. The square in front of the Church and the Town Hall has become an attractive and social rest space, while a disused green area has been transformed into an Urban Park, creating continuity between the anthropic and natural landscapes.
The peculiarities that have made the square a fundamental element in traditional cities are the same principles that we have neglected for too long, causing the loss of identity and urban dimension in these spaces. For this reason, the urban regeneration of San Benedetto Val di Sambro has redeveloped two areas that, despite being close, did not present a physical or perceptive continuity with the aim of mending the urban landscape, improving its accessibility, recognisability and safety.
In the specific case of the square in front of the Church and the Town Hall, a place of passage has been transformed into an attractive and dynamic space, capable of stimulating social interactions thanks to a coherent planimetric design, the insertion of street furniture and the use of materials that give the street the dignity of a high-quality public space.
Furthermore, to encourage the recovery of the spaces inside the area and allocate them to recreational activities, an Urban Park has been created that has redeveloped a disused green area, creating a place of transition between the urban and natural landscapes. The permeability and porosity of this environment have made it accessible from multiple points, acting as a glue with the surrounding urbanized area. The use of natural materials and the design of paths, which allow to overcome topographical differences in level, contribute to generating a new environment, of transition and continuity towards nature.
This space, in addition to connecting the different areas, hosts events and activities, becoming a real theatre — from the Greek theáomai, meaning "to stand and watch" — to admire the surrounding landscape and host open-air shows.
