SILENT KINEMATIC, VIMAR HELLAS, XENIA 2022

TAKA + PARTNERS as Architects

In the context of the exhibition of Xenia 2022, an expo centered around hospitality design, TAKA+PARTNERS designed the pavilions for Vimar Hellas. The main pavilion stands at 97,5 m2, and with the addition of the smaller exhibition stand the project totals at 103,75 m2.

With the showcase of the new switches, sockets and automation systems of the company in mind, the pavilion was m to promote the products and to simultaneously create a festive atmosphere through lighting design, celebrating the 60-year anniversary of Vimar Hellas.

The main pavilion consists of the bar, the reception area with a table for the visitors, a small storage space, the vertical light totems exhibiting the company products, a seating space in the entrance of the pavilion and a back wall with information about the company and its product lines.

The initial concept of the design was the creation of a lit ceiling, that would draw the visitor in after entering the hall and giving the desired festive atmosphere to the pavilion. The two main volumes, those of the bar and the storage space, are dressed with polycarbonate sheets and are lit from inside, as to encompass and showcase the open plan design of the exhibition space.

The bar was placed on the front of the pavilion, since it plays the role of both reception, seating area, conversation space and the core of all the more informal and relaxed communication.

The company products were placed on panels standing on bright plexi glass bases, creating totems placed around the space a way that facilitates the movement of a large number of visitors.

The characteristics of the new line of plugs and switches – Linea – that was showcased for the first time in Greece at Xenia 2022, such as a linear and delicate design, the discreet curve in the section of the switch and its silent return to the user’s touch were the guiding principles for the design process.

222 cubical lights were designed for the ceiling, suspended on 6 columns and 37 rows. The suspension height of the lights of each line is a little lower or higher than the previous one, creating a “wave of light”. Each light is dimmed differently, so the final result gives the impression of a silent kinematic ceiling, referring to the silent return of the new product line switches.

The back wall of the pavilion is divided in two parts from the bright volume of the storage space. On one part are presented details about the tradition and history of the company, technology, sustainability and innovation. On the other part are showcased the characteristics and design sensibilities of the new product line.

The choice of black color for the metal structure that supports the pavilion, the floor, the surfaces of the back walls and the ceiling was to amplify the atmospheric effect of the light sources and to create an antithesis to the white light.

A smaller pavilion based on the same principles and color palette, inspired partly by the company logo, was designed for the Architect Lab exhibition space, to showcase the custom product lines of the company.
