SKYCOURT is the result of an extensive renovation to a “bubble-era“ semi-detached house, transforming it into a modern house connected to the city. Located in a quiet residential area, the house is just a few blocks from one of Tokyo’s major business districts. The clients were very ambitious: they wanted to maximize the living space, be able to use the rooftop space, create a backyard with privacy, and develop a structure flooded with light.
Every successful renovation project requires the clients and architect to first recognize the positive characteristics of the existing space. For example, even though we cannot make large modifications to the building structure, how can we best leverage the frame construction and walls? What kind of space will be created when we introduce natural light from above by carving out the roof? In this case, it was helpful that the clients lived in the old structure for one moth to add their real life experiences to the design process.
Before the floor plan was finalized, the location of the main living spaces was subject to countless revisions as we considered how best to bring in light and wind into the space. The living room and bedroom itself was expanded along the existing architecture by removing unnecessary walls. Unusual volume was created by punching a hole through the roof, resulting in a heart-like space in the center of the house that opens to the sky.
In the basement, a quiet office and quest room were installed as a space for solitude. On top of the building, a new angular roof structure was mounted where the air-conditioning units used to be, thereby creating a new third-storey lounge with outside deck where the clients can enjoy the view of Tokyo\s skyscrapers that dazzle at night.
