Designery Unveils Studio Bagechaa in Shahpur Jat: An Experiential Tribute to Delhi’s Charbaghs

Designery as Interior Architects

In the timeless romance of Delhi’s Mughal architecture, the city’s landscape is a canvas where history and artistry converge. Mughal design, with its intricate kalakaari and poetic symmetry, remains an eternal muse, weaving a story of grandeur and refinement. Once graced by majestic sandstone mausoleums enveloped by verdant gardens, these charbaghs were more than architectural marvels—they were sanctuaries of peace, where nature and design converged to embody balance, serenity, and a vision of paradise on earth.

Nestled within the heart of Shahpur Jat, a locality that still retains its narrow lanes, old havelis, and ancient monuments; the echoes of Delhi’s old-world charm intertwine with the vibrance of its modern reinvention. Now a bustling hub of cultural spots, artisanal studios, and fashion boutiques, the neighbourhood effortlessly bridges history with the contemporary. It is here, amid this tapestry of past and present, that Studio Bagechaa takes shape through a visionary design studio–Designery; a space that pays homage to the Mughal legacy while embracing the modern spirit of the city.

True to its name, Studio Bagechaa, spanning 700 sq ft, is a modern homage to the charbagh, embracing a design that captures the tranquil essence of Mughal gardens within a refined retail space. Green hues evoke a lush, garden-like atmosphere, while a central water-inspired feature divides the store into four distinct zones, guiding visitors through a thoughtfully curated experience. This quadrilateral layout not only enhances the brand’s identity but also creates an inviting and serene environment that encourages exploration and curiosity for the visitor to step in.

At the heart of the space, a sculptural seating arrangement, reminiscent of a traditional fountain, serves as both a focal point and a subtle guide for intuitive customer flow. This central element elegantly reflects the spatial rhythm of charbagh layouts, dividing the store into experiential quarters that enrich the shopping journey and define clear sections of display.

Extending beyond spatial organisation, the design takes a deeper dive in the Mughal era with its meticulous detailing. Inspired by the rich heritage of Indian architecture, the minimalist aesthetic is elevated by subtle references to historical minars and intricate carvings. Custom-crafted forms , delicate lattice patterns, and hand-finished surfaces showcase finesse of the traditional Indian craftsmanship while maintaining a contemporary elegance. The refined colour palette harmonises with these elements, adding warmth and sophistication to the store’s ambiance.

With Shahpur Jat’s reputation as a hub for wedding wear, Studio Bagechaa anchors itself contextually; stands out yet blends seamlessly with its surroundings. However, the narrow frontage and elongated layout posed a challenge for visibility and accessibility. “Optimising on the opportunities, we incorporated vertical displays and strategically placed focal points, drafting every inch of the limited wall space to ensure each outfit shines. The result? A space that now creates curiosity within the pedestrians and draws their attention inward,” says Deeksha–the cofounder of Designery. To this, Sushant adds –”despite working within a rented property with structural limitations, the team used opportunities for creative expression and innovative space planning.”

Taking a level further than just the concept, Studio Bagechaa’s materials reflect its commitment to authenticity and environmental consciousness. Reclaimed solid wood crafted into minar-style pillars adds a touch of tradition, while repurposed wooden logs hanging racks, blending sustainability with style. The seamless dark grey concrete flooring provides a neutral base, allowing the colourfully intricate wedding wear to command attention, while the pastel hues evoke a calming, garden-like ambiance that subtly shifts focus toward the display.  The space thus concludes, to strike a perfect balance between heritage and modernity, creating a destination that resonates with elegance, tradition, and a deeper sense of India’s design legacy.

Designery’s approach for Studio Bagechaa embodies an "Experiential" design language, rooted in storytelling and sculptural details. "For us, design is a means to communicate the soul of a space," say co-founders Deeksha and Sushant. By combining historical design principles with contemporary aesthetics, the team curates an engaging and memorable retail experience, with elements such as minar-like pillars that register in the minds of visitors as iconic markers of Studio Bagechaa. To experience Studio Bagechaa firsthand, visit the studio at Shahpur Jat, Delhi.
