A High‑Performance Glazing Envelope for an Elite Golf Facility

The Kingdom at The Grove is a purpose‑built performance and custom‑fitting centre developed in collaboration with TaylorMade Golf at one of the United Kingdom’s leading golf destinations. Conceived as a premium environment for analysing and refining player performance, the building combines advanced technology with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

IQ Glass was appointed to design, supply and install a comprehensive package of specialist glazing systems across the facility. The glazing strategy plays a central role in the architectural concept, enabling uninterrupted views to the driving range and embedding a direct visual relationship between interior training spaces and the course beyond.

Design Drivers: Transparency, Scale and Performance

From the outset, the architectural intent centred on maximising visual connection to the golf landscape while delivering high levels of thermal performance. Large‑format glazing was essential to achieving this, particularly within the lounge and putting studio where clear sightlines support both user experience and spatial orientation.

A key challenge lay in balancing minimal framing with the demands of a high‑performance building envelope. Glazing systems needed to accommodate significant heights—dictated by the trajectory of a golf ball from the indoor training bays—while maintaining structural integrity, environmental control and user comfort.

Flush internal and external transitions were also a priority, requiring careful integration of drainage and threshold detailing to ensure a seamless relationship between interior floors and external terraces.

Large‑Format Sliding Doors Framing the Golf Course

The primary architectural gesture is expressed through a series of large‑scale slim sliding glass doors that open the building directly onto the course. Within the main lounge, a two‑panel sliding system spans approximately 4.6 metres in width and reaches a height of 4 metres, creating a full‑height glazed opening that frames long views across the driving range.

Each sliding panel, weighing over 400kg, was engineered using double‑glazed, heat‑soak tested glass with a solar control coating, delivering both visual clarity and controlled solar gain. The minimal aluminium framing allows the glazing to recede visually, reinforcing the sense of openness while supporting the building’s architectural discipline.

A second sliding system of similar design connects the putting studio to the exterior, ensuring a consistent language of transparency across the main performance spaces. Together, these elements establish a continuous visual dialogue between interior and landscape, enhancing both the experiential and functional qualities of the facility.

Integrated Glazing for a Multi‑Functional Interior

Beyond the primary façade glazing, IQ Glass delivered a wide range of integrated systems tailored to the building’s diverse internal functions. These include high‑performance entrance doors, internal view panels and frameless windows that support both operational requirements and user experience.

A frameless internal window to the workshop allows visitors to observe the club‑fitting and construction process, reinforcing the transparency and craftsmanship associated with the facility. Elsewhere, a continuous high‑level strip window runs along the circulation spaces, formed from multiple structural glass panels aligned with the building’s internal steel structure to introduce consistent daylight into deeper areas of the plan.

Triple glazing was used in key locations to enhance thermal performance, while discreet framing and structural glazing techniques ensure visual consistency across all applications.

Detailing for Performance and Usability

The glazing systems were developed with careful attention to both technical performance and daily use. Integrated drainage channels within the sliding door thresholds enable flush floor conditions without compromising weather resistance, supporting smooth movement between interior and exterior spaces.

All glazing was engineered to meet specified wind loads, with heat‑soak tested toughened glass used throughout to ensure long‑term reliability. Solar control coatings and low‑emissivity glass specifications contribute to a balanced internal environment, achieving strong daylight transmission while limiting solar gain.

Frames and visible aluminium elements were finished in a muted RAL 7013 tone, selected to complement the wider material palette and maintain a cohesive architectural expression.

Glazing as a Driver of Experience

The completed building demonstrates how high‑performance glazing can define both the architectural identity and functional success of a specialist facility. From arrival, users are presented with clear sightlines through the building towards the golf course, establishing an immediate connection between interior activity and the external environment.

Within the lounge and putting studio, the scale and clarity of the glazing systems maximise natural light and reinforce a strong visual link to the landscape, supporting both the technical demands of performance analysis and the comfort of users.

By combining large‑format sliding systems, frameless glazing and carefully integrated façade elements, the project achieves a balance between transparency, performance and durability—reflecting the precision and innovation associated with elite‑level sport.
