The adaptive reuse of 16 East 16th Street culminated in a reimagined gabled crown that fulfilled R.H. Robertson's original, unbuilt vision from the late 19th century.UHPC was selected specifically for it's high compressive strength, which enabled the complex geometry required for the lace-like screen. Traditional stone or conventional precast would not have achieved the same structural performance with such refined profiles and reduced weight. The gable consisted of more than 125 unique panels, each shaped to meet the intricate dimensional and layering requirements of the design.
Custom molds were produced by CNC milling high-density foam, allowing precise replication of the varied apertures and relief depths across the facade. Each piece was individually hand-stained according to a detailed color plan provided by BKSK architects. Through advanced materials engineering, precision digital fabrication, and meticulous hand-finishing, the UHPC gable delivers structural efficiency and extraordinary visula depth. The project demonstrates how contempory ultra-high performance concrete can extend the life of historic buildings.
