This is a low-cost rehabilitation and extension to a former school building. Like a parasite, the extension uses the corridor, toilet groups and staircase of the existing school, making it extremely efficient in terms of usable floor space. All functions requiring different ceiling heights are situated on the first floor of the extension. This wing is covered by a steel construction with a traditional wood and bitumen roof. The roof is camouflaged by a layer of western red cedar planking to protect it from ultraviolet light and direct heat. This was the only ‘extravagance’ permitted and gives the building an unusually elegant appearance.
