Building a Beacon for Health

GBBN Architects Inc. as Architects

High on a hill, this ambulatory expansion becomes an elegant, highly visible destination for health and healing.

Demonstrating TriHealth’s commitment to community care, the uplifting environment of this ambulatory expansion bathes patients, families, visitors, and staff in ample daylight. Strategic views of the surrounding landscape enliven the experience of moving through the building.

The expansion adds 92,000 sf of additional space to an existing medical office building, enabling TriHealth to bring primary, cancer, and cardiac care—as well as specialties including surgery, OB/GYN, ENT, gastroenterology, and pediatrics—under one roof.

The façade’s precast concrete panels form a simple, elevated, plane and accommodate a large expanse of windows, making the project visible to commuters on local highways day and night. The entry canopy appears as a floating bar thanks to a significant cantilever. The interior’s neutral palette features pops of color to help people navigate their way to appointments. Locating a central stair near a green wall of living plants is an invitation to walk instead of riding the elevator.

In the open staff area, soundproof booths are transparent, quiet, and convenient spots for charting or phone calls as physicians travel between patient exams; locating private offices outside of the clinical hub increased the amount of space available for patient care. Because acoustics impact staff stress levels, GBBN designed and fabricated visually dynamic ceiling fins for the staff work area. They help mute extraneous sound and bring a sense of calm that enhances productivity and collaboration.
