UNI-CENTER

Hanyang University Student Union Renovation: UNI-CENTER
Located along the main pedestrian axis connecting the subway, main building, and welfare center, the old Student Union was transformed into “UNI-CENTER,” a welfare-oriented community hub for students.
Beyond functional improvement, the project restores the building’s sense of place and redefines it as a central node within the campus circulation network.

The renovation visually and physically opens the building toward the outdoor plaza.
L-shaped frames surrounding the windows create depth and rhythm on the façade, while continuous curved forms flow from ceiling to wall to floor, guiding movement and softening the overall atmosphere.
The previously dark terrace was renewed with metal louvers, linear lighting, and vivid green furniture, becoming a bright and pleasant outdoor lounge.

The entrance hall connects the exterior plaza and interior lounge through bright materials and linear lighting.
Formerly a simple passage, the first-floor lobby was opened up by removing partitions, transforming it into a spacious public lounge where students can rest and interact freely.

The open lounge consists of three zones:
Table Lounge – a central gathering area with long tables for group study and discussion.
Stair Lounge – existing concrete stairs finished in teak, reinterpreted as stepped seating for relaxation and informal meetings.
Bar Lounge – a warm, intimate area with wooden bar tables and dichroic glass creating a soft, colorful ambience.

To move away from the rigid atmosphere of traditional offices, the administrative area features a custom organic-shaped counter made of birch plywood and steel.
This counter acts as both a structure and furniture, flexibly dividing space while guiding movement.
White tones and U-glass bring a bright, organized mood to the workspace.

Team offices, meeting rooms, and utility spaces share a consistent design language.
Curved walls, wooden panels, and indirect lighting together create a warm, cohesive environment.
Through spatial integration and material continuity, UNI-CENTER becomes a welfare platform where students can stay, connect, and engage.
