Architectural & interior design study of Villa Agali

In an off-plan area of the settlement of Kalamaki, within the Municipality of Chania, the holiday residence under study is developed on a one-hectare plot. Initially designed to meet the needs of a five-member family, the building is organized on two main levels with auxiliary spaces in a semi-elevated basement and is positioned along the eastern boundary of the plot.

The architectural proposal focuses on redefining the residence as a high-standard, contemporary tourist accommodation. Special emphasis was placed on shaping the surrounding outdoor space to create small “islands” of relaxation, designed to support a variety of summer uses and encourage the diffusion of activity into the open-air environment.

The composition is articulated through clean, rectangular volumes oriented northwest. The volumetric design is enhanced by recesses that form terraces with increased privacy and contribute to the lightness of the overall form. The ground floor houses an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, along with two bedrooms — one of which includes a private bathroom. The upper level consists of four additional bedrooms, three of which have en suite bathrooms, along with a shared bathroom.

The surrounding landscape was designed with a focus on functionality and comfortable circulation. The swimming pool is centrally placed, aligned with the longitudinal axis of the building, ensuring uninterrupted visual and spatial continuity between the interior and exterior.

The material palette combines terracotta-toned exterior plasters with marble, wood, and bamboo, creating a gentle, earthy composition. The subtle use of breeze blocks in solid walls breaks up large surfaces and adds plasticity to the façade. At the same time, emphasis was placed on the use of high energy-efficiency materials, reflecting a contemporary architectural approach to sustainable construction.
