The desire of a semi-detached house without generating the visual impression of a semi-detached house. The design process for this project began with this requirement of the client. Thus, we placed one of the two double garages between the two "semi-detached houses" and tried to find a facade design that does not follow the usual principle of semi-detached houses.
Thus, on the garden side, an inner courtyard was created and the two residential units were given an independent location as in a single-family house. On the street side, however, the two double garages together with the two "house halves" form an entire residential unit.
Due to the sloping position across the property, it was possible to also expose the basement in the southern area to light, as this floor rises from the ground like a plinth. This, in combination with generous glazing on the first floor, resulted in a sculptural form of the two houses that is somewhat reminiscent of two lying sphinxes.
Even the two houses themselves stagger in their elevation, harmoniously adapting to the terrain. The interior facades of the two buildings tend to remain closed in order to somewhat block out the reciprocal views. On the sides and to the front, however, the facades open generously to nature. The respective upper floors direct their view towards Lake Starnberg like a picture frame.
