On Rua da Junqueira in Lisbon, Villa dos Coches sits at the meeting point of two distinct scales and languages: the historic continuity of the surrounding city on one side, and the presence of the National Coach Museum on the other. Rebelo de Andrade responded with two clear gestures rather than one. The existing building is preserved, its volumetry, materiality, and deep-toned tiled façade retained to keep the urban fabric and built memory of Rua da Junqueira intact. Alongside it, a new volume introduces a contemporary, more abstract language, its façade built from a regular rhythm of tubular metal profiles that filters light and shifts in reading throughout the day, positioned as a mediator between the domestic scale of the street and the open dimension of the square rather than a competing statement.
What makes the project distinct is how directly it writes its context into the architecture itself. On the west elevation, a tile panel depicts a coach in motion, reinterpreted through a contemporary line, a direct and unmistakable nod to the neighboring Coach Museum that turns the building into more than a private residence. Between the two volumes, an inner courtyard organizes circulation and lets light move through the ensemble, transforming the relationship between old and new into a continuous spatial experience. As the architects put it, Villa dos Coches is not an exercise in contrast but in precision: it doesn't replicate the past or compete with the present, it positions itself between the two, treating the city not as a backdrop but as a working material.
