Set on the sandy terrain of Carvalhal, in the heart of Comporta, Cúpulas da Comporta reimagines two of architecture's oldest forms, the dome and the barrel, as the basis for a contemporary single-family home. The dome, which shelters, and the barrel, which contains, are drawn directly from the region's own vernacular: the water cisterns and chapels that have long marked the Alentejo landscape. The house unfolds across three volumes arranged around a central garden, one holding the social spaces and master suite, a second housing four guest bedrooms each capped by its own perfect dome and private garden, and a third given over to outdoor storage, with white-rendered walls, handcrafted ceramic details, and native planting letting the house settle into its sandy surroundings rather than stand apart from them.
What makes the house distinct is its balance between sculptural presence and discretion. Its rounded, domed forms are unmistakably bold against the flat coastal landscape, yet they're built from the same materials and geometries the region has used for centuries, with covered patios and open-air pathways keeping indoor and outdoor life in constant conversation, a defining trait of Comporta's architectural language. The result reads less like an object placed in the landscape and more like something that grew out of it: a house that is simultaneously ancient in reference and entirely of its moment.
