Timeless elegance and contemporary design in a historic villa in Bordighera, Liguria

Villa Per Noi”, built in the 1940s in Bordighera, Liguria, was recently renovated by 967arch to transform the former holiday home of a bourgeois family from Valtellina into a permanent residence. With a surface area of 240 square meters, the project skillfully balanced renewal and preservation, maintaining the architectural contrast with the surrounding Ligurian dwellings while respecting the sobriety and rigor of the original building.

For the flooring throughout the house and part of the living room cladding, the porcelain stoneware collection Eterna Mix Gris was chosen. This material, with its elegant and versatile gray tones, has helped create a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. The durability and ease of maintenance of Eterna Mix Gris make it ideal for living spaces, while ensuring an impeccable aesthetic that harmonizes perfectly with the villa’s original design.

For the bathroom cladding, the Look Glossy collections in Blue, Avio, and Olive, and Mélange in Wisteria, were employed. Look Glossy Blue, with its intense and vibrant blue tones, adds a touch of color and brightness, transforming the bathroom into an oasis of relaxation. Ragno Look Glossy Olive, with its green nuances, brings freshness and a sense of naturalness, creating a harmonious and contemporary ambiance.

The project expanded the communal areas and created new private spaces, such as the gym and the study, while preserving the villa’s original atmosphere. The existing openings were enlarged to enhance the brightness and embrace the warm Ligurian light. Some original furnishings, designed by the first and sole owner, were restored, inspiring the finishes, materials, and color palette.

In the noble floor corridor, the period built-in wardrobe, lined with silk featuring Chinese motifs, was preserved and became a source of inspiration for the colors throughout the villa. The fixed mahogany furnishings were restored and paired with new elements crafted from the same wood species. In the living area, the existing furnishings above the fireplace are integrated with bespoke furniture and contemporary design pieces, creating an elegant and functional space.

The exterior areas have been redesigned drawing inspiration from the typical Ligurian terracing, alternating Istrian stone paving with wooden cubes crafted from reclaimed railway sleepers. The façade has been finished with warm and luminous plaster tones, while the base features a dry-stone wall, referencing the Ligurian architectural vernacular. The existing vegetation has been preserved, harmoniously integrated into the new garden.
