Villa Scagha

A landscape connecting town and road
Villa Scagha comprises 60 apartments arranged in separate residential buildings on a gently undulating landscape of grass, trees and low planting, bordered by water. The concept restores a visual relationship between the existing buildings at the edge of Schagen's town centre and the Zuiderweg.

Different buildings, one family
The length, width and precise position of each building respond to the housing programme, existing mature trees, views from the apartments and the design of the surrounding ground. Despite these differences, a consistent architectural language and palette of materials bring the buildings together as a recognisable family.

Natural materials and adjustable shade
Rough, grey, vertical timber boards define the ex-ternal facades, combined with large glazed surfaces at the entrances. On the west-facing elevations, concrete and glass sit within a timber frame. Sliding steel frames with adjustable timber louvres provide solar shading, allowing the facade to respond to changing daylight.

Generous access, flexible homes
The widened access gallery on the east side does more than connect the apartments. Openings between gallery levels admit additional daylight, while the extra width allows the gallery to serve as a second outdoor space. Flexibility in orientation and layout supports homes that can accommodate changing needs over time.
