WellGear Assen is a new headquarters and technology facility designed by 12WAT Architecten for the WellGear Group, strategically located along the A28 motorway in Assen. The building brings office functions, engineering, and large‑scale industrial operations together in one integrated and future‑proof complex. Designed to support the company’s continued growth and international ambitions, the project consolidates previously separated locations into a single, highly efficient workplace.
The facility accommodates approximately 250 employees and combines contemporary office spaces with a generous industrial hall, known as the WellGear Technology Center. This hall provides space for the assembly, maintenance, and testing of advanced modular equipment used in the decommissioning, maintenance, and restoration of oil, gas, geothermal, and salt wells. The strong physical connection between offices and workshop areas encourages close collaboration between engineers, technicians, and partner companies, supporting an integrated way of working.
Architecture
The architectural concept by 12WAT Architecten balances a robust industrial character with openness and transparency. Daylight, clear sightlines, and a logical spatial organisation define the office areas, while the building’s overall massing and materialisation express its technical and industrial function. The design results in a recognisable and confident presence within the Assen‑Zuid business area, reflecting WellGear’s position as a technology‑driven company.
Construction
Construction of the steel structure and building envelope was carried out by Rijkens Staal‑ en Systeembouw, whose expertise in steel and system construction enabled the realisation of large spans and flexible industrial spaces. This construction approach provides the robustness required for heavy industrial use, while allowing adaptability for future changes in equipment and processes.
Facade
The façade forms a key part of the architectural expression. For the exterior envelope, ArcelorMittal Building Solutions – department Specials delivered custom‑engineered steel façade systems. For this project ArcelorMittal has delivered the wellknown Creneo Block 40 (standard measurements) in combination with two custom designed Creneo 40.160-4 (120mm space) and Creneo 40.130-5 (90mm space) in Autentic 35mu coating in a gold / bronze color Pyrite 5986. These bespoke façade profiles offer design freedom in geometry, rhythm, and depth, contributing to the strong visual identity of the building along the motorway. At the same time, the façade systems meet high standards for durability, performance, and sustainability.
Sustainability is fully integrated into the building design. The facility has been developed as an energy‑neutral building, incorporating a closed‑loop ground‑source energy system with heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, and a smart building management system. These installations ensure efficient heating, cooling, and energy use, while providing flexibility for future technological developments.
The site layout is tailored to heavy industrial activity, with extensive areas of durable, recyclable concrete paving and reinforced working zones for the safe handling and testing of equipment. Logistics and earthworks were optimised to reduce transport movements and environmental impact, using circular material flows wherever possible. The building forms part of a landscaped business park that preserves ecological value alongside industrial functionality.
With construction nearing completion and the building entering its final phase before full operation, WellGear Assen represents an important milestone for the company. The project brings together architecture, engineering, and industrial performance in a coherent whole, creating a sustainable and flexible headquarters that supports innovation, collaboration, and the ongoing energy transition.
