What would an ideal campus look like? We hope that it is like an open town, with rich spaces, surrounded by nature, and every child who comes here can wander freely.
In Guizhou, 92% of the land is mountainous. Mountains have brought a variety of natural beauty to Guizhou, and the terraces are landscapes that only exist in the mountains.
Located in Xingyi City, Guizhou Province, Deyi School is a primary school with a planned area of 19,500 square meters. At the beginning of the establishment of the school, the client entrusted Archimophic to do the architectural design to convey the school's innovative educational concept.
Geographical location
The project is located in Jingjiatun and Kezuotun village, Xingyi City of Guizhou Province, the planning Wanfenglin International Tourism City, with the nature of land for education and scientific research.
Planning level
The mountainous characteristics of Guizhou have created a large difference in terrain height of this project, coupled with the limited site area, which cannot fully utilize the existing natural terrain for site layout. Only the southwest side of the site is connected to Jingfeng Avenue, and the rest of the site has a large height difference with the adjacent plots, undulating along the mountain. The height difference in the plot is more obvious, with steep slopes and a difference of nearly 25 meters between high and low points.
Therefore, the designer considered that the campus building complex was in line with the mountain, and adopted the strategy of using the basement overhead to level the site, to retain the site characteristics of the original natural slope as much as possible and create a richer ground layer space.
This project hopes to break the boundaries between the often school activity venue and the indoor classroom space, maximize the expansion and diversification of the building's activity space, and provide a richer activity space. This allows more educational activities to be carried out outdoors, not just in the classroom spaces.
In terms of architectural volume, we try to create a rich activity space at each building height, and the design creates a variety of outdoor and semi-outdoor activity spaces for students through layers of retreat, overhead space, outdoor corridors, roof gardens and other languages, releasing the lively and active nature of primary school students. This enables students to receive a good cultural education while having more opportunities and venues to be exposed to nature and extracurricular activities.
Architectural level
The project proposes to build a full primary school building with a main body of five floors, and to build a three-storey administrative building and two 7-storey student dormitory buildings, underground parking lots and activity/storage spaces, as well as playgrounds, roads, activity squares, water supply and drainage, power supply and distribution, greening and other projects. The height of the main building is not more than 24 meters.
The northeast side of the base is a sports area, the northwest side is a teaching area, and the south side to some east side is a dormitory area. The dynamic and static are separated to form a beautiful park environment. The school's teaching building and administrative building are arranged close to the main entrance of the school, which is convenient and easy to reach, while to the east and inside, sports venues, student dormitories and canteens are arranged. Set up a basement ramp near the entrance to the campus traffic.
The underground space, in addition to the arranged parking and equipment space, provides additional overhead activity space for students, providing students with as many outdoor interactive spaces as possible within the limited plot area.
In terms of design ideas, we try to use architectural changes to echo the local topography of Guizhou, such as layers of terraces and canyons.
On the façade, the project attempts to create a simple, bright and futuristic sense of the school space in a simple modernist architectural style. In terms of façade color, the main body of the building is mainly white, interspersed with bright colors such as orange, blue, yellow, and green. So that the overall campus building in a concise atmosphere at the same time, without losing the lively atmosphere.
Make full use of the characteristics of the site to create a green landscape system that is small and large. The park's event venues, courtyard construction and aerial activity platforms, underground overhead event venues and roof gardens have rich levels of landscape space.
From the sky farm of the teaching building, to the terrace activity space, to the overhead activity space, to the ground landscape greening, and the sunken courtyard staircase, all reflect the public space of the diversified campus.

On the façade of the building, bright tones such as orange, blue, yellow, and green are partially interspersed to increase the sense of liveliness.

No matter how ever-changing the planning conditions are, arc builders always analyze the specific problems of each unique project, flexibly adapt to changes, and find the best solution!
Guizhou is a veritable "mountain kingdom", in such a natural environment, Guizhou ancestors used their wisdom to create a mountain architectural culture with special cultural imprints. In this project, the arc building successfully combined the local mountainous landform characteristics of Guizhou, and carried out the architectural layout according to the difference in slope, and achieved staggered effects, so that the building obtained a building form that was in harmony with the natural landscape of the mountain.
It is always our pursuit to create fun and healthy activities and places for children to interact, and to encourage them to explore the environment and understand nature. In the light of the global health crisis, we sincerely hope that this campus can become an organic carrier for people and nature to live in harmony and healthier ways.
