Quzhou Lixian Future Community Commercial Housing

Driven by the "Future Community" initiative in Zhejiang Province, the Quzhou Lixian Future Community, as one of the first pilot projects, includes commercial housing developed on four plots with a total above-ground floor area of approximately 235,000 square meters and a plot ratio of 2.0. From the outset of the bidding process, the goal was to fundamentally change the state of commercial housing's extreme pursuit of profit, seeking a path from the foundational model that better aligns with the vision of a good life, creating a modern "good residence" beside the ancient city with a millennium of history. Northbourne Road

Matthew Giles Architects’ contemporary interpretation of proportion, form, and architectural detailing see the remarkable transformation of this 4 storey, villa-like home, first built in the 1860s.   The semi-detached suburban house lies within Clapham Park & Northbourne Road Conservation Area, and so the design team responded with an approach that was sympathetic and cohesive with much of the Victorian vernacular in the local area: yellow London stock brick, stucco mouldings around the doors, timber sash windows, and natural slate roofs.  © James Newton The remaking of this home included the demolition of an existing rear addition, replaced by a striking single storey infill extension that accommodates a ne... Developed by Braeburn Estates, a joint venture between Canary Wharf Group plc and Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company, Belvedere Gardens is the third building to be launched within the Southbank Place masterplan. Ground floor retail units and a considered landscaping strategy help to increase variety and activity within the immediate urban area, with vibrant, public-facing active frontages.    The two towers step up from 11 storeys to 21 storeys in height, addressing the existing urban forms and strengthening overall visual coherence across the wider masterplan which extends to 5.25ha. During the early stages of... More

The Residence

The Residence is a mixed-tenure development of 505 homes set within the Vauxhall Nine Elms Opportunity Area. The site was former industrial land and Ponton Road, which sits next to a railway viaduct, once contained a train station and sidings. The developer, Bellway, split their land holding into two plots and GRID was appointed to design the eastern parcel for private tenure, while Maccreanor Lavington are the architects for the western parcel for affordable housing. © Jack Hobhouse The architectural treatments are however very different. The site is adjacent to the Nine Elms regeneration masterplan area and an understanding of the overriding design principles of the Allies and Morrison masterplan was essential in driving the bu... 10 George Street

10 George Street was completed for Canary Wharf Group’s rental platform Vertus. The first of three build-to-rent developments to arrive on the Wood Wharf Estate, it provides 327 homes, new retail spaces and shared amenities for residents. © Jack Hobhouse The building’s podium and tower are two distinct elements with the podium block, clad in stone, helping to create a legible human scale facing onto George Street and the water’s edge. Fronting onto Canary Wharf’s South Dock, GRID Architects’ bold design has a strong urban presence suited to the prominent location in Wood Wharf, east of Canary Wharf. The masterplan for Wood Wharf was designed by Allies and Morrison – the intention for this devel... More

Wembley Parade

Sited on the edge of Brent’s Wembley Estate Opportunity Area, GRID Architects have designed and delivered Wembley Parade for Anthology, part of Lifestory.  © Jack Hobhouse The striking curved forms provide 192 new homes across a range of tenures and typologies, set within beautiful communal gardens that trace the edge of the nearby Wealdstone Brook. Wembley Parade contributes to an area that is developing into a great place to live and work, knitting into the London Borough of Brent’s strategic regeneration proposals. The scheme is comprised of two elements, a sweeping curved block which follows the edge of the brook and a dynamic 13-storey tower. Snow Hill Wharf

This development has regenerated an under-utilised, contaminated brownfield site, and brings life to the city’s ‘inner ring’ of former employment land. Once the centre of the world’s gun manufacturing industry, Birmingham’s Gun Quarter was identified as an area of opportunity following its 20th Century decline, when a large part was demolished by post-war town planners. The key site issues were the detached location from the city centre, a lack of public spaces, poor quality walking routes, and industrial warehouses with no active frontages. The canal shortcomings included poor lighting, towpath access, and buildings which turn their backs on the watercourse.  The site is located opposite St Chads, the cit... More

Wildgarten

In the development area WILDGARTEN in the southwest of Vienna 11 residential buildings with 207 privately financed apartments were built. Above a two-story underground garage, which serves as a new quarter garage for several building sites, 13,053m² of usable floor space was achieved. Sandra Grossauer The urban master plan scheduled a mix of buildings with different sizes. Different typologies were developed from the given building sizes from "S" to "XL". The 11 residential buildings are divided into 5 different building sizes ranging from row houses to 8-story point houses. As identity-creating features, the names of the typologies are based on children's book names. The typologies not only differ in height and volume, but are g... More

The central entrance is positioned next to a continuous walkway in the south-western area. A central courtyard is inserted into the base to provide a gathering place for the residents of the building. A community room and laundry room are directly connected to it. Brooke House

Brooke House, a new residential development by GRID architects, has completed in Acton, west London, delivering 102 100% affordable homes for women on behalf of Women’s Pioneer Housing (WPH) in partnership with L&Q. The 15-storey building replaces an outdated estate of 39 flats with a significantly expanded and future-facing housing offer, tailored to the needs of single women in London. The project’s name also reflects this legacy. Previously known as Brook House, it was renamed Brooke House in a subtle reference to Emma Brooke, the 19th-century novelist and campaigner for women’s and workers’ rights. This connection is carried into the building’s entrance foyer through a mural by award-winning printmaker... More

The multi-storey building of 22 floors for the dominant and accentuated development of the residential quarter continues the design style of the CYBER series. The projected complex with a free planning structure is organically integrated into the architectural ensemble and the system of already formed city streets due to the non-standard space-planning solution, the dynamics of facades and silhouette. Expressive compositional architectural techniques combined with modern high-quality materials and a high level of workmanship make a stunning impression – the house becomes a decoration of the city.
