In keeping with its function, the new building presents itself as a modern fire station and complements the fire station campus with the large fire vehicle hall and the rescue control centre. In 2013, the political commune of Weinfelden arranged an open architectural competition for a new single building to house the fire brigade and the Samaritan emergency services; their resources had up until then been distributed over various locations. Out of the 58 participants, it was the «Grisu» project by kit that was the winner. The jury praised the project as a cultivated industrial building. The Vorarlberg community of Hittisau’s newest civic building is located on a former gravel pit between a forest and a steep ravine overlooking the Subersach River. The unconventional combination of functions in one building, an easily justifiable practice in smaller settlements, is the central theme explored in the design. While the fire station is embedded in the sloping terrain and aligned along the road, the wooden cuboid of the cultural centre levitates above it; its glass facade opening towards the village centre. Located in Marion, Iowa, Marion Fire Station No. 1 is a two-level, 21,200-square-foot facility designed by OPN Architects to improve emergency response times while addressing the physical and mental demands of firefighting. The project combines an all-electric energy system, geothermal heating and cooling, a high-performance envelope, and biophilic design strategies with spaces that support firefighter health. Tuttlingen, a town in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, built a new fire station on a site of around 9,800 square metres. The steel-reinforced concrete structure was finished off with long-lasting, age-resistant clinker brick facing.16 vehicle boxes were planned. Other features included a servicing and washing area, and at the rear of the complex a workshop, a storehouse, and changing rooms and toilets for the fire fighters. A 14 metre high hose tower for drying the hoses after use rounded off the project. Due to the nature of the building, reliability is naturally high on the list of requirements at fire stations. The option for a fast-running engine is also often an important condition. Because the fire engines are often parked close to the entrance, it is important that all facilities are also present around the cars. The pipes, lighting, etc. are often mounted on the ceiling and around the doorway. The municipality of Alkmaar has the policy that all its buildings must perform 20% better than the applicable legal norms. Additionally the municipality of Alkmaar requires a minimum score of a clear pass (7.0) per theme for the GPR building (Municipal - Performance - Guideline).
